2D Surface Mapping for Mine Detection Using Wireless Network

Abstract

There are approximately 500 million live buried mines in about 70 countries, presenting a major threat to lives and economies. Detecting mines is difficult when their exact positions are unknown, and manual methods do not scale across diverse terrain. This paper presents a prototype mapping robot system, MinerBot, that uses a microcontroller and sensors to map a surface with depth values in real time. MinerBot can move in any direction and collect information using an ultrasonic sensor; the data are passed to a MATLAB mapping function via socket communication. MinerBot is autonomous, efficient, and inexpensive.
